Dr Eugene Wong is a Consultant Adult and Pediatric Spine Surgeon. He trained as an Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Malaya. He specializes in complex disorders of the entire spine. His interests lie in the treatment of all aspects of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal disorders focusing on minimally and less invasive surgical techniques, adult and paediatric spine deformity, complex cervical and lumbar reconstructions, spinal tumour surgery and degenerative cervical and lumbar conditions. He has a special interest in spine-hip syndrome cases and is trained in hip arthroscopy and minimally invasive anterior total hip replacement.

Dr Wong is Fellowship trained in Spine Surgery at various eminent centres in Singapore, Australia and USA. He spent 6 months at the National University Hospital in Singapore with Professor HK Wong acquiring specialized techniques in microscopic spine surgery, disc replacement surgery and thoracoscopic scoliosis surgery. He then spent a year at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Calvary Private in Adelaide, Australia with Dr OL Osti. Various specialized techniques of nonfusion instrumentation, radiofrequency cervical and lumbar facet denervation and Transforaminal Interbody Fusion TLIF was acquired. Further training and experience was acquired at the Austin Health and Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne, Australia for 18 months. He pursued a combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship Programme with Mr Peter Wilde, Mr David de La Harpe and Mr Myron Rogers. A vast experience in spinal trauma and tumour surgery was attained. Deformity surgery experience was further acquired at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia with Mr Peter Turner.

He then went on to spend 18 months in Atlanta, USA at the Veteran Affairs Medical Centre and Emory University with Professor Scott Boden. He then returned to work at a Level 1 trauma centre specializing in orthopaedic and pelvic trauma injuries at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. Vast experience was gained in managing polytraumatized patients. He has also undertaken a visiting fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital (TSRH) in Dallas, Texas.

During his training in orthopaedic and spine surgery he has visited many prominent surgeons at various centres namely Prof Oliver Gonschorek at Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallklinik, Murnau Trauma Center in Germany; Dr Anthony T Yeung at the Arizona Institute of Minimally Invasive Spine Care in Phoenix, Arizona, USA ; Dr Larry Khoo at LA Spine Clinic, California, USA; Dr Karl Mahr at Sozialmedizinisches Zentrum Ost Vienna, Austria; Prof Petr Suchomel at Regional Hospital Liberec in Prague Czech Republic ; Dr Pierre Pries at University Hospital of Poitiers, Poitiers France; Prof Gilles Perrin at Université Claude Bernard in Lyon, France; Dr Stefan Kroppenstedt at Universitätsklinikum Charite,Berlin, Germany; Prof. Christian Woiciechowsky at St. Marien Krankenhaus Lankwitz Berlin Germany , Dr Neel Anand at the Cedars-Sinai Institute for Spinal Disorders, Los Angeles USA and Prof. Avinash Patwardhan at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital Rehabilitation Research & Development ,Chicago Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, USA.

He was the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association (MOA) Ambassador to the 25th Annual Congress of The Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association in 2005 and twice nominated for the Traveling Fellowship for the Japanese Spine Research Society (JSRS) 2005 and 2006 to Japan.

Dr Eugene Wong has great interest in education and research. He has given numerous presentations at both national and international level meetings. His interest includes teaching surgical anatomy having qualified with the Postgraduate Diploma of Surgical Anatomy from the University of Melbourne, Australia. Dr Wong is currently the Adjunct A/Prof with Perdana University School of Graduate Medicine.

He is an active member of various societies which include the Malaysian Medical Association, Academy of Medicine Malaysia, SICOT, American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA), North American Spine Society (NASS), American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS)
